Omar Galliani. Drawings between tradition and innovation

In un’epoca caratterizzata dal primato della tecnologia, dalla corsa spasmodica verso l’innovazione e dalla meccanizzazione del fare artistico che ha preso il sopravvento sulla sua qualità artigianale, il modus operandi di Omar Galliani (Montecchio Emilia, 1954) si discosta da quello della maggior parte degli artisti contemporanei per l’attenzione posta su un genere dal sapore antico, quasi arcaico che ha fatto della manualità e dell’unicità la propria cifra stilistica: il disegno.
Il lavoro di Omar Galliani è il frutto del perfetto equilibrio tra l’incanto nato dalla reiterazione dello stesso segno artistico tramandato nel corso dei secoli -la tradizione del disegno internazionale- e le suggestioni scaturite dall’incontro della matita dell’artista con la variegata enciclopedia del contemporaneo. Il mondo ritratto nelle opere di Omar Galliani è un micro cosmo popolato da santi, personaggi storici, persone comuni, ma soprattutto creature provenienti dall’universo femminile, ninfee aggraziate e nel contempo sensuali dalla bellezza senza tempo.
Queste ultime sono tra le protagoniste indiscusse della mostra dell’artista a Tianjin, in occasione di Tianjin International Design Week 2015. Nei lavori in mostra così come nell’intero corpus creato dall’artista in più di trenta anni di carriera, il reale si fonde sapientemente con l’ideale, persino il quotidiano diventa suggestione e il mito acquista umanità tramite un segno che sa essere tagliente ma anche avvolgente e che nell’iter artistico di Omar Galliani è significato e significante, avendo valore in sé e per sé. In an era characterized by the primacy of technology, the frantic pursuit of innovation, and the replacement of craftsmanship with the mechanization of artistic practice, Omar Galliani’s (b. 1954 in Montecchio Emilia) approach differs from that of most contemporary artists. He emphasizes an antique, almost archaic, practice that requires a manual process and unique quality: drawing. Omar Galliani’s work is the result of a perfect balance between the charm of the repetition of an artistic gesture passed down through the centuries, the tradition of international drawing, and the suggestions of the meeting of the artist’s pencil with the varied contemporary world. The microcosm portrayed in Omar Galliani’s works is populated by saints, historical figures, and ordinary people, who are above all female creatures, sensual and graceful nymphs with timeless beauty. They are the protagonists of Chinese Diary, the visual compendium presented on the occasion of Tianjin Design Week.  In the pieces on display and in the entire body of work that Omar Galliani has created over the last thirty years, the realm of the real blends perfectly with the realm of the ideal, daily life is sublimated into evocative tones, and myths are imbued with humanity. The artist’s style, both sharp and soft, plays an important role in this process, as both signifier and signified, with a value of its own.
